The Sweetest Pregnancy Announcement - Keene Valley
Updated: Feb 1, 2019
Amanda and I traveled to New York City on October 24th for a photography gig that I had. We were getting ready to go to a party so I was curling my hair to look somewhat presentable. As I walked into the room to grab something, Amanda saw my curly locks and started crying and telling me how beautiful and royal I looked. That night she puked her guts out. When I woke up she told me that if she wasn't pregnant she was probably going crazy (which I agreed with since she cried about my hair).
I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that Amanda took somewhere around 10 pregnancy tests. All negative. Weird, considering the hair situation and constant vomiting. Amanda chalked her symptoms up to stress, because there was a ton going on in her life at the time. However, she continued to take a few more tests in secret because if she was pregnant, she wanted to surprise Mike (her husband) with a pregnancy announcement. Still negative.
Fast forward to November 7th. At this point the chance that Amanda was pregnant wasn't really on my mind anymore since all of the previous tests she took were negative. I was in the middle of a maternity shoot when Amanda called me (which isn't unusual), and she told me to call her back because she had something to tell me. For some reason it didn't occur to me that she could actually be pregnant. I finished up my shoot and called her back.
"Laura, I just took a positive pregnancy test".
We both cried over the phone together and immediately started planning how to surprise Mike with the news. We decided to do it the next day because Amanda is not good at keeping secrets for very long. We went to Hobby Lobby and bought a cute little wooden box, and I made a letter board sign that said "big brother" for Seth (their two-year-old) to hold.
For context, Amanda is an influencer on Instagram and does product shoots for brands all the time. We decided to tell Mike that she was doing a holiday brand shoot for a company and needed him and Seth to help model for the shoot. He thought nothing of it since he models with her all the time.
We got to the location in Keene Valley and continued the ruse that this was a product shoot. Amanda had Mike hold the box and I told him to "open it up like you've just received an amazing gift" (hehe). When he saw the note it took him a second to process what it said. In shock, he kept asking her "wait, for real?!? For real?!?". That was the first time I had ever seen Mike cry, and it took a lot in me not to cry my eyes out.
When Amanda had asked Mike what he wanted for his birthday the Sunday before the shoot, he told her he wanted another baby. Well, happy freaking belated birthday Michael.
